Due to Tokyo 2020 being moved forward a year due to covid, it’s now been three years since the last Olympics, but that doesn’t mean there is any less anticipation for this year!

When are the Paris Olympics 2024?

This year’s summer Olympics will be held between Friday 26th July 2024 to Sunday 11th August 2024.

How did the first Olympics start?

The Olympic games originated back in 776 BCE in ancient Greece to honor the god Zeus. The exact origins are shrouded in myth, with several different legends attributing to their start.

According to one, the games were founded by Hercules, in another it talks about Pelops, a mythical king and hero of the Peloponnese. The ancient games were held every four years and served as a festival of sports, culture, and religious worship.

The ancient Olympics were abolished in 393 CE by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, who considered the games to be pagan rituals incompatible with Christianity. The modern Olympics were then revived in the late 19th century by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian.

The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896, marking the beginning of the Olympics as we know and love them today.

Where are the Olympics being held this year?

Paris was awarded the Games at the 131st International Olympic Committee session in Lima, Peru on 13th September 2017. The decision was between Paris and Los Angeles, who were awarded the 2024 and the 2028 Summer Olympics respectively. This isn’t Paris’ first rodeo, having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, meaning that Paris will be the second city after London to have hosted the summer games three times.

Most of the events will be held in the city of Paris and its metropolitan region, however this year, surfing will be held in Teahupo’o reef pass, Tahiti, French Polynesia, breaking the record for the farthest medal competition to stage outside the hosting city.

What happens at the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies?

For the first time in the history of the Summer Olympic Games, the opening ceremony won’t be held in a stadium, but outside along the heart of the city, along the Seine. With a ceremony reminiscent of the Hunger Games, the Olympians will sail down the Seine with boats for each national delegation, with cameras equipped onboard each boat for the fans to see the athletes up close. The parade will take a 6-kilometer route across Paris, coming to an end in front of the Trocadéro, where the ceremony's finale will take place.

The closing ceremony promises to be as impressive as the kick-off, as sixteen days later on August 11th, just a few hours after the last event, stage director Thomas Jolly will be once again using his talents to provide us with an incredible artistic experience. Here we will see the closing parade, where the athletes will each carry their national flag, the medal ceremony, speeches by the organizers, and the traditional extinguishing of the Olympic flame.

What sports are played in the Olympics and where are they being held?

In all, 32 sports are on the programme for the Paris 2024 Olympics being played in 35 different venues:

• Archery – Watch one of the world's safest sports at Les Invalides
• Athletics – The Stade de France, Hôtel de Ville, Esplanade des Invalides & Trocadéro will host track and field, marathon & race walking.
• Badminton – Porte de La Chapelle Arena will host the fastest racquet sport in the world.
• Basketball – Both men’s and women’s games will be held in the Bercy Arena & Pierre Mauroy Stadium, with the 3x3 taking place in the Parc Urbain la Concorde.
• Beach Volleyball – First introduced to the Olympics in the 1992 games, this year’s games will be held at the Eiffel Tower Stadium.
• Boxing – Competitors will go head-to-head for glory at Roland Garros. Although he is not competing, YouTuber-turned-professional boxer Jake Paul will be training with the US boxing team (If he can put his bottle of Prime down long enough to don a pair of boxing gloves).
• Breaking – The Olympics newest sport will take place for the first time ever at Parc Urbain la Concorde.
• Canoe – Watch the captivating and thrilling races in the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
• Cycling – With 5 different events, you are in for a treat if cycling is your favorite sport. Road cycling will be held in Les Invalides, Pont Alexandre III & Trocadéro. The National Velodrome will be hosting cycling, Elancourt Hill will see Mountain Biking, and BMX Freestyle & racing will take place at Parc Urbain la Concorde & Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines BMX Stadium respectively.
• Diving – Dive right into one of the oldest sports of the competition being held at the only permanent sports facility built for the Paris 2024 games – The Aquatics Centre.
• Equestrian – Where do horses go when they are sick? The Horsepital. Sorry. Head over to the Palace of Versailles for some actual entertainment in the only sport where women and men compete together in events such as jumping, high jump, long jump, and mail coach.
• Fencing – One of the five sports that have been permanent fixtures since 1896, fencing will take place at the Grand Palais.
• Field hockey – Yves du Manoir Stadium with a capacity of 15,000, will be hosting the field hockey games.
• Golf – Professionals agree that golf is one of the hardest sports to play, but that doesn’t stop us thinking we could hit a hole-in-one on the first try! Witness the competitors swing their way to victory at the Golf National.
• Gymnastics – Leotards at the ready, these talented competitors will be competing for gold at the Bercy Arena & the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
• Handball – Pierre Mauroy Stadium will be hosting teams from all around the world as they rack up goals for that first-place prize and glory.
• Judo – For men, Judo marked its entry into the Olympics in 1964, with women’s Judo following a whole 30 years later in 1994. This year the event will be held at Champ de Mars Arena.
• Modern Pentathlon – This sport consists of fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian show, jumping, pistol shooting, and cross country running. That’s one busy afternoon! The Palace of Versailles will be hosting this year.
• Rowing – Another one of the original five sports, this year rowing will be held at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
• Rugby – The games start two days prior to the Opening Ceremony at the Stade de France.
• Sailing – Known as yachting until 2000, sailing has been one of the Olympic sports since 1896. The races will be held in the Marseille Marina.
• Shooting - The world’s top shooting athletes will be gathering at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre to compete for gold.
• Skateboarding – All is set for skateboarding to make a return to it’s second appearance at the Olympics. Parc Urbain la Concorde will be hosting all the grinds, carves & ollies this year.
• Soccer – We are in for a treat this summer, with the UEFA Euro 2024 just around the corner, the Olympics is also serving up some top soccer matches. Games will be played at several different venues around Paris: Matmut Atlantique, Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, Groupama Stadium, Stade Vélodrome, La Beaujoire, Allianz Riviera & Parc des Princes.
• Sport Climbing – This sport involves three formats: bouldering, speed, and lead. Athletes will be competing at Le Bourget Sport Climbing Venue.
• Surfing – Athletes will be riding waves at Tahiti Teahupo’o as surfing returns for its second Olympics.
• Swimming – Men and women compete in 16 swimming events, involving four different strokes, over several distances, all at the Paris La Défense Arena.
• Table Tennis – The Seoul Olympic games in 1988 was the first time table tennis made an appearance, with singles and doubles competitions for both men and women. The South Paris Arena will be hosting the athletes.
• Taekwondo – This year will mark 24 years since Taekwondo made its first appearance at the Sydney summer Olympic games. Grand Palais will be hosting the games.
• Tennis – Team USA is in the lead for capturing the most gold medals in tennis in Olympic history. Will they add to that number this year? Watch the matches at Roland Garros to find out!
• Triathlon – With an overall distance of 51.5km, athletes will swim, cycle & run in a loop from Pont Alexandre III.
• Volleyball – South Paris Arena, found in the Paris Expo complex, will be the competing grounds for the world’s best volleyball teams.
• Weightlifting – First developed in Ancient Greece, weightlifting has a simple objective: the athlete who lifts the most, wins. The athletes will be lifting their way to glory at the South Paris Arena.
• Wrestling – The sport has come a long way from Ancient Greece. Wrestlers were popular heroes of the ancient games, from lifting live bulls to tearing trees apart. Nowadays, wrestling involves two athletes attempting to pin each other down. Catch the action at Champ de Mars Arena.

The Olympic medals

A medal ceremony will be held at the end of each event to present the athletes in first, second and third place with Olympic medals. This year the medals will contain iron that was once a part of the Eiffel Tower. The pieces of iron have been cut from parts of the tower that have been replaced throughout the years. These pieces of metal will be melted down and infused with gold for first place medals, silver for second place, and bronze for third place.
